Primary Sense is a Primary Health Network (PHN) owned and operated tool.
The original version of Primary Sense was developed by the Gold Coast PHN between 2017 and 2019. Eventually used by more than 700 Gold Coast GPs, covering almost 90% of the region’s population, the value of Primary Sense was recognised by a number of other PHNs and a project commenced in 2021 to scale it up for broader use by more general practices and PHNs across Australia.
Supported by Gold Coast PHN, WA Primary Health Alliance (WAPHA) led the project to produce the scaled-up version of Primary Sense (Primary Sense 2.0) and host it within the PHNs’ highly secure data storage and analytics platform, Primary Health Insights (PHI). WAPHA worked closely with general practices, universities, the Royal Australian College of General Practitioner’s Standards and Quality Care Expert Committee members to develop Primary Sense 2.0.
The new version of the tool has been operational since mid-2022. It is being adopted by some PHNs and made available to general practices in their jurisdictions.
Covering a period of five years, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) granted full authorisation of the latest version of Primary Sense in March 2022 – confirming the tool does not conflict with Australian competition law.
Primary Sense is a medical device that meets all criteria required for exempt clinical decision support software under the current Therapeutic Goods Administration regulations.
